Implant Dentistry Costa Rica

Over time we lose teeth due to disease, injury or just normal wear and tear, resulting in unattractive gaps in our smile and discomfort or inconvenience when eating or talking.

Implants provide a permanent solution for dental losses; they look and feel like natural teeth and with proper placement and care can last a lifetime. Implants can replace a single tooth or all the teeth (top and/or bottom) to fully restore the mouth to its original dentition. Implants can also be used to anchor dentures.

A dental implant consists of a metal post placed into the jaw (like a natural tooth’s root) over which an artificial tooth is fixed.

Replacing a missing tooth with an implant is a two-step process: first the post is surgically inserted into the jaw, and then six months later, after the gum and bone have healed, a metal support (abutment) and the replacement tooth (crown) or teeth (bridge) is attached to the top of the implant. A temporary restoration such as a bridge or denture is used in the period between the implant surgery and attaching the replacement tooth.

The first surgery to insert the implant into the jaw takes a couple of hours. The second surgery to fit the metal abutment into the implant and then the artificial tooth (crown) takes about an hour. Both procedures are performed under local anesthetic.

Crowns, Bridges and Veneers Costa Rica

A crown is a metal, porcelain or porcelain-fused-to-metal cap that completely covers or encircles a broken or damaged tooth or is attached to a metal post inserted in the jaw (implant) to replace a missing tooth. Crowns may also be used to protect weak or cracked teeth or as a substitute for an extensive filling. Crowns are installed in two appointments. In the first appointment the tooth to be crowned is filed down to make room for the crown and then an impression is made from which the crown will be molded. Then the impression is sent to the lab to craft the crown. A temporary, acrylic crown may be fitted over the tooth to cover and protect it until the permanent crown is ready if necessary. In the second appointment the permanent crown is cemented into place.
A bridge is a metal, porcelain or porcelain-fused-to-metal piece that literally ‘bridges the gap’ to fill in or restore missing teeth. They are permanently cemented into place using crowns on the adjoining teeth on either side of the gap, with the false tooth (or teeth) in the middle. Bridges are created and placed in a similar manner as crowns.
A veneer is a thin layer of material placed over a tooth surface to improve its look or protect it. Veneers are used to change the color of badly-stained teeth and can also reshape broken or damaged teeth to some extent. Veneers are created and applied in a similar manner as are crowns though the tooth preparation is less extensive.

Root Canal Treatment Costa Rica

When the area inside the tooth root (known as the ‘root canal’) becomes infected or a tooth is badly decayed, treatment may be necessary to remove discomfort, stop infection and save the tooth. In this procedure the nerve and pulp inside the root are removed as they aren’t vital to the tooth’s health or function and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and then sealed to prevent further problems. Sometime a small pin is inserted into the root to provide stability. Root canals are generally performed in one appointment, though additional appointments may be necessary if the infection is severe.

Gum Disease Control with ‘Perio Trays’

Gums can become inflamed and damaged as a result of chronic bacterial infection caused by a build up of plaque (microorganisms) around the teeth as a result of inadequate cleaning or other factors. While gum disease (known as ‘periodontal disease’) is best prevented through diligent dental care, if left untreated it may require more aggressive treatment including surgery to avoid tooth loss. In some cases though the use of specially-designed trays that deliver medication directly to the gums may be effective in controlling the problem. These ‘perio trays’, created from an impression of your teeth, are filled with medication and are worn overnight or for short periods each day, to reduce the microorganisms that cause problems. Two appointments are necessary to set up the system, one to take an impression of the teeth from which the trays are created and another to pick up the trays and medication and learn how to use them. The patient performs the actual treatment at home according to a schedule set up with the dentist and may need follow-up visits to evaluate the progress.

Teeth Whitening Costa Rica

Teeth naturally lose their whiteness over time and as a result of the consumption of some foods and beverages as well as smoking. Recent statistics reveal that your smile is an important factor in professional success so dental bleaching has become a popular aesthetic treatment. Whitening is easily carried out at home with the tray-technique used for gum disease control to deliver the bleaching agent to the teeth as needed and can be set up in one appointment.
Before After

Full Dental Restoration Costa Rica

A full restoration restores the teeth to their original (or better) condition using a combination of techniques, depending on the condition of the teeth and the patient’s goals.
